The Peak District
The Peak District is an area of outstanding natural beauty where modern development is restricted. The Peak became Britain's first national park in April 1951, extending to 555 square miles and with 2,550 km of public rights of way. Now it is the second most visited national park where people from all over the world head to relax and find peace in the beauty of the natural world. It is a place also where you find adventure and exploration with some of the finest climbing, caving, walking and cycling in England. There are quaint villages and towns, full of curiosity shops, cafe's, bars and restaurants, historic houses like Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. There are ancient monuments, scenic drives and great picnic locations to be explored. Within the locality are many visitor attractions such as Alton Towers, National Tramway Museum, American Adventure, Steam railways, Gullivers Kingdom, Heights of Abraham / cable car rides etc. You can join an organised outdoor activity or tour at one of the many Activity Centres within the park or simply go it alone. You can even take to the air with a balloon, glider or a helicopter ride!
